Piotr Skorut – Man of Many Passions
Born in Poland, in Sulkowice near Krakow. He was a graduate from the Technical University in Krakow, Poland. Strong supporter and member of Solidarność (Solidarity) movement and participated in the worker strike in 1980 at his employer, Fiat. Immigrated to the US in the early 80’s.
With his entrepreneurial spirit and experienced gained, Peter established his own company in the early 90’s as owner and employee of SPS Engineering, Inc. SPS is a local company, providing design and supply of equipment for the water and wastewater industry. SPS continues to supply equipment to the US and global markets cooperating with suppliers in Poland and throughout the U.S.
Proud Pole in Utah, Piotr was involved with our local community, often found gathering around polish church, and then later in helping with organizing RAZEM Utah. He was involved in and supported anything “Polish” that was happening in the valley, keeping our traditions, organizing events, hosting Polish artists, Polish Olympic Committee members, and many other Polish visitors to Utah over the years.
Piotr loved life all around him and the people with whom it was shared. He was an avid skier. His passion for skiing, mountains, nature, snow and the outdoors may well be placed near top of his passions/priorities. He arrived in Utah, not knowing much about the uniqueness of this beautiful state and certainly unaware of that Utah was known for having the, “The Greatest Snow on Earth” but once he did, fell in love with all of Utah’s beauty. From the peaks of the Cottonwood canyons, to the arches of Bryce, narrows in Zion, and to the grandiosity which is the Grand Canyon.
He is gone now in the physical sense, perhaps God needed him somewhere else, but his spirit lives on in all of us.
While on the chair lift with his three young sons, he was asked why they weren’t in Sunday school or Church and if that was not okay as the commandment states to keep the Sabbath holy? To which he replied.
“My sons, while church is important that I agree, in skiing and in nature there is also something divine and beautiful that we must find time to experience and enjoy. As well, at this elevation, we are a bit closer to Heaven and God.”
It is a great tribute to Piotr that our polish skiing competition and gathering is named after him and takes place in our beautiful mountains. It was always Peter’s hope that all in the Polish community could come together and continue to be an inspiration and example to other’s in and around our community, to live fully and RAZEM.
